weekly photo challenge…silhouette

This blue heron stood on the boat launch dock at Front Street Park in Melbourne, FL bright and early in the morning a few weeks ago…he was looking for his breakfast, and I was looking at him, silhouetted by the orange glow of the sunrise over the Indian River.

gopher turtle 10/21/12

Imagesuch a beautiful day yesterday…the first real day of fall weather in central fl…took a trip to gleason park in indian harbour beach…the man went for a run, and the boy and i went for a walk around the lake…the gopher turtles were out enjoying the sunshine and a bit of lunch…i love trying to capture their faces…i’m fascinated by their tiny little teeth and their expressions…this guy was way more interested in eating his lunch than the fact that I was trying to take his picture, so he didn’t stay still for more than a moment…just long enough for me to capture this portrait…

yesterday’s surf @ 2nd light–satellite beach, fl

Imagei made it out to 2nd light yesterday…so glad…good surf, talented surfers, pretty light…kind of awesome…filled a 4G card in half an hour…haven’t had time to sort through them all yet…so far, this is one of my favorites…

my morning lizard capture

Sitting at my computer this morning, I saw movement on the floor to the right of me, out of the corner of my eye. Never good…and less so when I’m home alone without the man or the boy to scream for…for it means that there is a creature of some sort that needs to be captured. Not my favorite thing to do.  Yes, I know that I’m making more of it than I need to; it was just a little brown anole who somehow found his way into my house. I suppose he was no happier to find himself  there on my office floor than I was to find him there. I’m sure all he wanted to find his way out…or perhaps score some breakfast…or both.  Usually I play the helpless screaming female card, and get the menfolk to round up the offending critter. But since I was on my own this morning, I had no choice but to deal with this bad boy by myself.  Not as easy as you’d think; he was a jumpy little sucker.  It took me two tries to get him situated in such a way so that I could get him safely outside, back where he belonged.  I did it…but not before taking his picture first so I could prove my bravery and skill to the man and the boy. (…as I write this, it is occurring to me that I may have just lost my shot at playing the helpless screaming female card next time…oh, well…I suspect they knew it was an act all along…:) )

friday morning rainbow

In a Florida summer, you get a lot of rain…which means you also get a lot of rainbows. There were a few sprinkles outside this morning, little showers that blew in from the ocean, so it’s no surprise really that we were greeted with this sight when we went out to take the boy to school this morning.
This rainbow was wide and bright in the morning sky, easy to photograph; the most striking thing about the scene, though, were the clouds.  Against the blue morning sky, the contrast of the dark and light clouds with the colors of the rainbow made the image all the more interesting. The light changes quickly, and within a few minutes it was completely gone…so I feel all the more fortunate to have stumbled upon this at just the right moment.

beachside

we went beachside for the first time in ages today…the man wanted to make an introduction video for the virtual-school creative writing class he’s teaching…i thought my role was going to be to hold the bloggie while he spoke, but he said he could do it himself…which freed me up to stroll the beach for awhile…there was a small flock of terns sunning at the shoreline…it looked to me like this adult tern was lecturing his youngster…who looked bored to pieces…this reminded me of what my own kids look like when i’m trying to talk to them…so i had to take their picture…:)

yes, he does abide…

school started yesterday here in brevard county, fl…the boy is in 6th grade, his last year of elementary school…he came home from school yesterday with some forms from his teacher to be filled out, and some papers that they’d done in class, ‘getting acquainted’ kind of games for the kids to get to know each other better…on one of them, each child answered a series of questions (like ‘what’s your favorite food?’ and ‘who is your favorite musician?’ etc.) and then went around the class to see which of their classmates had similar ‘likes’…as i read the questions and his answers, i smiled…and kind of cringed…for my boy’s ‘likes’ are somewhat different than your average 11-year-old…for example…his favorite actor? leonardo dicaprio…his favorite tv show? ‘it’s always sunny in philadelphia’…his favorite movie? ‘the big lebowski’…his favorite music group? the beatles…what he wants to be? ‘happy’…apparently this wasn’t meant for the teacher, only for the kids to do amongst themselves…not sure what the teacher would make of his answers, having just met him…i’m sure they’ll make sense to her as she gets to know him…for my boy is definitely a little dude…a peaceful, happy little dude…and yes, he does abide…
